Learn by Doing
Experimenting with the features is a good way to get started. Try entering coffee in the text search box. Now try the same search changing "Dialogue Only" to "Keywords" or "Anywhere." Try searching for coffee in Keywords Only, and also check "Kathy Appears" AND "Sandy Appears". Try changing the AND between them to OR. Note that you can use the name menus to search for any combination of up to four characters.Browsing Results
Your search results will come up in a special browse mode, thirty at a time. (This prevents hitting the official comic site with excessive image-load requests, which might otherwise result from a search matching thousands of episodes.) The navigation menu bar changes from green to blue, and, if there are more than thirty results, offers controls to page forward and back through the results, or go to the first or last page of results. Clicking on a comic image will take you to the official comic site page for that day.
Archives Searchable to/Searching Episodes...
Carry On has been running since July of 2004. You may change the range of search dates, using YYYYMMDD format, if you are, for example, trying to locate a strip that you think came out within the last two years.
Our intrepid volunteers have thus far entered tags and search data for strips beginning in May of 2011, that is, the current and long-running Rackenroon story arc. Earlier strips from the years 2004-2011 may be searchable in the future.
Text Search Method
- If you select Match All Words, searching for port asbestos will only match strips containing both the word port and the word asbestos, whether adjacent or not.
- Selecting Match Any Word, the same search will match all strips containing the word port anywhere in the chosen search location, plus all strips containing the word asbestos.
- Selecting Match Exact Phrase, only strips containing the entire specific two-word phrase Port Asbestos would match.
Enter Search Text
Type in your desired search terms separated by spaces. Most punctuation is ignored by the search, except that the apostrophe in words like we've and isn't will match those words as expected.
Character Appearance Controls
Select up to four character names using the pop-up menus, and for each one, choose to match episodes where they appear on camera, do not appear on camera, or where they actually speak.
You may combine these with AND or OR, for example, to find episodes where Fred OR Trader Horn speaks, AND Songween OR Jinjur appears. To do that, select the special middle join that looks like ) AND ( to properly group the OR searches together. Tip: If you're not sure whether to use ) AND ( with the parentheses, or just regular AND, use ) AND (.
You may use the text search feature or the character search feature separately, or combine searches in both areas for more restrictive results, for example, to find episodes where Kathy Speaks AND Sandy Does Not Appear AND the word "coffee" is spoken.
Canon Only
By default, search results will only include plot-canon, storyline strips, excluding the author's personal photos of her farm and family. If you wish those to be included in the results, you can un-check the Canon Only box.
Tip
Searching for chapter or arc in "Keywords Only" will return all of the Start-of-Chapter (or Start-of-Arc) episodes.
